Knee Replacements |
| Smiles™ Rotating Knee Hinge |
The SMILES™ rotating knee hinge is an effective
solution for the revision of a primary knee replacement where serious
bone loss and/or knee instability is present. The SMILES™ rotating
knee hinge was developed in 1990. This rotating hinge has proved
to be ideal for some of the most complex revision cases we have
tackled. In addition, this rotating hinge has been used extensively
with our bone tumour replacements.
There are many advantages to this knee:
Optimal knee biomechanics - wide patella
surface with a shallow groove maintains anatomic patella tracking |
Precision made - intra medullary stem
length, diameter, curvature and angulation are determined from bi-planar
radiographs |
Bevelled bearing surfaces constrain the
rotational movement beyond ±5° |
Metal tibial casing designed for individual
needs |
Ability to reconstruct tibial bone loss
by using customised plateau plates |
Prolonged life of the axle bushes by using
a hyperextension bumper pad as a secondary bearing surface |
Stability of the joint without resorting
to a fully constrained knee hinge |
Minimises the number of modular components
thus reducing fretting |
Customisation improves stress transfer
to the remaining bone stock |
Contoured metal-on-plastic bearing surfaces
to reduce friction and wear |
Rotational laxity reduces torsional stress
at the cement/bone interface |
