Savile Row Precision Orthopaedics
We believe in taking a personalised approach to joint replacement and this is emphasised by our unique approach to first intervention knee replacement surgery.
This 'Savile Row' approach focuses on careful patient selection and uses CT scan data to enable us to design a personalised and optimised knee implant exactly matched to the patient. A surgeon-controlled Sculptor robot is then used to prepare the bone to receive the implant so that the implant is correctly positioned as planned.
We believe that designing the implant to fit the patient and using a surgical robot to aid placement is a major step forward compared to the current practice of cutting the patient's bone with a saw to fit a standard implant from an off-the-shelf standard size range.
Building upon the acquisition in August 2010 of Acrobot, a medical devices company specialising in computer assisted orthopaedic surgery, Stanmore has combined the knee design, licensed from Imperial College, London with robotic bone preparation to complete what it has now called its 'Savile Row' knee surgery solution.
This 'Savile Row' approach combines a number of proven concepts into a unique solution, offering a unique integration of technologies to provide a truly personalised solution. The benefits associated with offering this bone conserving patient specific implant together with accurate and reproducible robotic surgical placement include:
- Less invasive surgery
- Reduced hospital stay
- Improved functional outcome and longevity
- Less instrumentation
The 'Savile Row' system has the potential to increase operating room efficiency and reduce procedure cost by reordering the procedure workflow. Decisions about implant position and sizing are now made in a stress free environment before the patient reaches the theatre, saving expensive operating time. The use of Stanmore Sculptor negates the need for any cutting blocks and alignment guides and eliminates the high cost of reprocessing large instrumentation sets. Only two disposable high speed cutting burrs are used to completely shape the bone during the procedure and the entire instrument set is stored in one small A4 sized tray.
